Cremona, including a tour of the historical city centre and of the Violin Museum
CREMONA
(half day trip)
Departure from the hotel by private coach (time to be determined). Guided walking tour to discover the history of Cremona, from its Roman origins evidenced by the remains of the paved Via Solferino, to the splendour of the Middle Ages and Renaissance: the monumental complex of Piazza del Comune, overlooked by the cathedral dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the baptistery dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, the Town Hall, the Loggia dei Militi, and the famous Torrazzo bell tower, universally recognised as the symbol of the city. Inside the cathedral, make sure you check out the magnificent cycle of frescoes painted in the early sixteenth century by Boccaccio Boccaccino, Gianfrancesco Bembo, Altobello Melone, Girolamo Romanino and Giovanni Antonio de’ Sacchis known as Pordenone, all leading figures of Northern Italian art.
The tour then follows the birth and development of the local violin-making school, winding through the local workshops as far as the Violin Museum, with a stop at the prestigious Teatro Ponchielli and the cathedral’s magnificent organ.
You will then have time to taste the city’s famous nougat, before returning to the hotel.
